The First Christmas Angel

She sang to the shepherds the first Christmas night
Of a child who was God’s Son of Love and of Light
A bright star shone over the place of His birth
A stable too humble for a King here on earth

The angels looked down where the Christ child was placed
And sang wondrous music of his holy grace
Sweet songs of the angels drew forth from within
The masters of music, the greatest of hymns

Through hundreds of centuries the lyrics still chime
In the tune of an angel through seasons of time
To the heart and the soul, the most joyous of days
When carolers sing and the organ pipe plays

The music comes not from sound of a voice
But on wings that soar spaces where angels rejoice
And is placed very tenderly right by your ear
For the music of Christmas is not what you hear

It’s the song of an angel who witnessed a birth
And each year sends her glorious songs round the earth
She’s in bells of the carillon’s music that rings
She’s the notes in a hymn book, and violin strings

She is charity’s bell that is tolled for the poor
She’s the chimes that are hung by the wreath on your door
When the evening is over and midnight is nigh
And the silence of snow breaths a beckoning sigh

Open wide icy window to the quiet of night
And look to the sky for a Christmas delight
A sleigh bearing gifts and a jingling chime
Is the song of an angel through spaces and time
